Mats Nilsson is a Swedish artist educated at the Royal Institute of Art (Kungl. Konsthögskolan) in Stockholm, where he studied monumental painting, painting, sculpture, and theory. Since 1980, he has worked continuously with painting, sculpture, and installations, developing a distinctive, pop-art–influenced visual language that moves between the monumental and the intimate.

His work includes large-scale public artworks—such as the 23-meter outdoor mural House of Cards (Korthuset) in Stockholm—as well as exhibitions at institutions like Liljevalchs Art Hall. Alongside major projects, he creates smaller sculptures, objects, and collage-based digital works. Mats Nilsson has held numerous solo exhibitions across Sweden and is represented in public collections, including municipalities, regional authorities, and the Swedish Public Art Agency.

Mats Nilsson have made both theatre, movies and theatre scenography. Over several decades, he has designed and built stage sets and visual concepts for a wide range of productions, notably at Boulevardteatern, as well as Södra Teatern, Scala Theatre, and the Royal Opera. In addition to theatre, he has worked extensively with museum exhibitions, public art commissions, and the restoration and renewal of artworks in the Stockholm metro system. In recent years, his practice has also expanded into digital imagery and Photoshop-based collage projects.

Mats Nilsson är konstnär utbildad vid Kungl. Konsthögskolan i Stockholm, där han studerade monumentalmåleri, måleri, skulptur och teori. Sedan 1980 har han varit kontinuerligt verksam med måleri, skulptur och installationer, ofta med ett popkonstinspirerat och berättande uttryck som rör sig fritt mellan det monumentala och det intima.

Hans konst omfattar såväl stora offentliga verk – som den 23 meter långa muralen Korthuset på Kungsholmen och utställningar på Liljevalchs Konsthall – som mindre skulpturer, objekt och collagebaserade bildarbeten. Han har haft ett stort antal separatutställningar runt om i Sverige och är representerad hos kommuner, landsting och Statens konstråd.

Mats Nilssons konstnärskap har arbetet med teater, film och scenografi. Under flera decennier har han skapat scenrum, visuella koncept och scenografiska helheter för ett stort antal föreställningar, bland annat på Boulevardteatern, Södra Teatern, Scala och Operan. Utöver teatern har han även arbetat omfattande med museiutställningar, offentlig konst och restaurering av konst i Stockholms tunnelbana, samt med illustration och digitala bildprojekt.
